Terms:
  1. The Ninety-Five Theses: wrote by Martin Luther, a monk, to voice all the things that he thought the church was doing wrong, that were nailed to the churches door.
  2. The Divine Comedy: was written by Dante, is a story of a imaginary journey from heaven to hell. It is composed of 14,233 lines.
  3. Dowry: a large amount of money paid by the wife's parents to the daughters husband as a gift when the daughter gets married.
  4. Vernacular: the native language of everyday speech in a particular region as opposed to a language of wider communication that is not native to the population.
  5. Predestination: means that God has determined in advance who would be saved and who would be damned. It was introduced by John Calvin.



People:
  1. Martin Luther: German monk that reformed the catholic church, by writing the 95 theses, because he did not agree with the way the church was doing things such as selling indulgences.
  2. Giovanni Medici: credited with starting the Renaissance, did building projects that beautified Florence. His family, the Medici family, was one of the most powerful families in all of Italy.
  3. Leonardo da Vinci: one of the most well known artist in the world, also known as a renaissance man. His most famous paintings were Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
  4. Nicolo Machiavelli: "The Prince" wrote a book on how the government works, and gave advice for rulers of Italian city-states. He believed in taking risks in order to keep power.
  5. Francesco Petrarch: was an Italian scholar, known as the father of Italian Humanism. He also searched for old Latin manuscripts across Europe.

The Renaissance took place during 1360-1600. The meaning of Renaissance is rebirth from the Greeks and Romans. The period started the beginning of modern times in society. The meaning rebirth came from Italians who believed they had witnessed a rebirth in the Greek and Roman worlds. This time period was known as a new age and people started to start there own new ways and ideas. There were also many new types of people and groups. This period was known as an urban society and was very large. The age was also a good recovery from disaster and it was almost as if it was a new beginning for people. In many people eyes recovery and rebirth were one with eachother and everyone could just start fresh. Also, this was the first time people started to encourage individuality. They wanted people to be independent and do things on there own to show them the realities of life when your by yourself. The society changed during the renaissance. Everybody began to be treated more equal. There were also new people such as frescoes who had there own style and way of doing art that was never seen before. All in all, this was a great era with many new people and changed history.
